As a longtime home cook who prepares most meals for two, I’ve learned that clarity matters just as much as creativity in the kitchen. What We Mean by “No Red Meat”
For the purposes of this site, red meat includes beef, pork, lamb, veal, and related products.
When a recipe is tagged no red meat, that means the following are completely free of red meat:
- All ingredients listed on the recipe card
- All instructions on the recipe card
In other words, you can cook directly from the recipe card without needing to adjust or substitute anything, and the dish will fully qualify as no red meat.
A Note on Blog Content Outside the Recipe Card
Sections may occasionally reference red meat as an optional suggestion. These sections provide flexibility and inspiration without affecting the official tag applied to the recipe card itself. These sections include:
- Ingredient Recommendations
- Ingredient Alternatives
- Pairings
Over time, I plan to continue experimenting with ingredients and testing variations so that more recipes can be offered in clearly labeled no-red-meat versions where it makes sense.
What “No Red Meat Option” Means
A recipe tagged no red meat option is slightly different.
This tag means that the recipe card itself includes red meat, while the Ingredient Alternatives section of the blog post provides a tested recommendation for making the recipe without red meat.
This approach allows me to share recipes that are excellent in their original form and adaptable for those who prefer to avoid red meat—without pretending the two versions are identical.
Recipe Integrity Comes First
One of my core principles as a recipe developer is recipe integrity.
I do not force substitutions where they don’t belong.
If a recipe does not taste the same—or better—when red meat is replaced, it will not receive a no red meat or no red meat option tag. Period.
That means:
- No watered-down versions
- No disappointing swaps
- No labeling that sets you up for a meal that falls flat
If you see one of these tags, you can trust that the recipe has been thoughtfully considered and tested with flavor in mind.
