Monte Cristo

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 55 minutes
6 servings

  • 2 c Bisquick Original baking mix
  • ¾ c milk
  • 1 egg
  • 6 oz Swiss cheese, thinly sliced
  • 6 oz deli-style lean turkey, very thinly sliced
  • 6 oz deli-style lean ham, very thinly sliced
  • ⅓ c strawberry or raspberry spreadable fruit
  • powdered sugar
  1. Heat oven to 400ºF.  Lightly grease square baking dish, 8″x8″x2″, or spray with cooking spray.  Mix baking mix, milk and egg until blended.
  2. Spread half of the dough in bottom of dish.  Top with half each of the cheese, ham and turkey.  Spread fruit over turkey to within ½” of sides of dish.  Top with remaining cheese, ham and turkey.  Spread remaining dough over cheese, spreading to sides of dish.
  3. Bake uncovered about 30 minutes or until golden brown.  Let stand 5 to 10 minutes before serving.  Sprinkle generously with powdered sugar.  Serve warm.

You can make Monte Cristos right at home with this recipe from a little Bisquick cookbook. It is very filling though.  All that bread, meat and cheese.  Which is probably why I don’t recall serving it with any side dishes.

As far as sides, I would recommend a simple salad.  Perhaps butter lettuce and a light dressing.  Or even plain heat and eat veggies, like microwave steamed broccoli or green beans.

If you haven’t had a Monte Cristo before, the raspberry jam compliments the dish very nicely.  You can put it on like the recipe says.  Or if you’re unsure, feel free to leave it off and just put it on the side.

I will also note, this dish does not reheat very well.
